Bathymetric and acoustic backscatter data were collected simultaneously in 84 survey blocks. Seventy five of these blocks were surveyed with 100% cover of backscatter imagery and nine blocks were surveyed with 50% backscatter coverage. These data were collected as source material for planned benthic habitat mapping. An earlier project had been completed to map the very-shallow subtidal and intertidal areas. These mosaics were collected with the Reson Seabat 7101 multibeam sonar system in the San Francisco Bay. For this San Francisco Bay habitat mapping project, seven survey blocks were acquired with the Reson 7101 sonar, as these seven areas contained water depths that were predominantly deeper than 20 meters. Original contact information: Contact Name: Jen Eckerle Contact Org: California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) Title: Deputy Director, OPC Phone: 916-653-9416 Email: jen.eckerle@resources.ca.gov purpose: The primary purpose of this acoustic bathymetry acquisition is to provide the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC), as required for the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP) modern, accurately positioned sonar imagery data of San Francisco Bay coastal and near shore waters to delineate marine habitat types. Secondarily, the survey shall provide OPC and NOAA with bathymetric survey data from a combination of multi-beam and interferometric sonars. The combined survey data, including the imagery and the bathymetry, will support OPC's goals as well as assist with NOAA's mandate for port and harbor maintenance (dredging), coastal engineering (beach erosion and replenishment studies), and coastal zone management. credit: California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) and Fugro Pelagos, Inc. status: (MD_ProgressCode) completed pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NOAA Office for Coastal Management contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: (843) 740-1202 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 2234 South Hobson Ave city: Charleston administrativeArea: SC postalCode: 29405-2413 country: (missing) electronicMailAddress: coastal.info@noaa.gov onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://coast.noaa.gov protocol: WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link name: NOAA Office for Coastal Management Website description: NOAA Office for Coastal Management Home Page function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) information role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NOAA Office for Coastal Management contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: (843) 740-1202 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 2234 South Hobson Ave city: Charleston administrativeArea: SC postalCode: 29405-2413 country: (missing) electronicMailAddress: coastal.info@noaa.gov onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://coast.noaa.gov protocol: WWW:LINK-1.0-http--link name: NOAA Office for Coastal Management Website description: NOAA Office for Coastal Management Home Page function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) information role: (CI_RoleCode) custodian resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) asNeeded descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > MARINE ECOSYSTEMS > BENTHIC keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > MARINE ECOSYSTEMS > COASTAL keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > BIOSPHERE > ECOSYSTEMS > MARINE ECOSYSTEMS > ESTUARY type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords date: (missing) edition: 17.0 descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: CONTINENT > NORTH AMERICA > UNITED STATES OF AMERICA > CALIFORNIA type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) place thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Location Keywords date: (missing) edition: 20.8 descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: California keyword: Contra Costa County keyword: Marin County keyword: San Francisco Bay keyword: San Francisco County keyword: San Mateo County keyword: Solano County keyword: United States type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) place thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Geographic Names Information System date: (missing) descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: California Ocean Protection Council keyword: California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP) keyword: Reson Seabat 7101 type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: DOC/NOAA/NOS/OCM > Office of Coastal Management, National Ocean Service, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) dataCentre thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Data Center Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2017-04-24 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 8.5 citedResponsibleParty: GCMD Landing Page descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Benthic type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) project thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: InPort date: (inapplicable) resourceConstraints: (MD_LegalConstraints) useConstraints: (MD_RestrictionCode) otherRestrictions otherConstraints: Cite As: Office for Coastal Management, [Date of Access]: San Francisco Bay Multi-beam Bathymetry: Area A [Data Date Range], https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/inport/item/47860. resourceConstraints: (MD_Constraints) useLimitation: NOAA provides no warranty, nor accepts any liability occurring from any incomplete, incorrect, or misleading data, or from any incorrect, incomplete, or misleading use of the data. The actual horizontal accuracy of the bathymetry exceeded these requirements, as the navigation/position data for the vessel was post-processed using an Applanix SmartBase post-processed kinematic solution, resulting in vessel horizontal positioning RMS values under 5 centimeters. Likewise, the vessel equipment offsets were measured to an accuracy of approximately 1 centimeter (1 sigma level) using a Total Station. Vessel roll and pitch were measured to an accuracy of approximately 0.02 degrees (1 sigma level) using an Applanix POS MV. These factors created highly accurate horizontal positioning of the data that exceeded IHO Order 1A standards. Overlapping features in the bathymetry were examined to confirm accuracy standards were met.; Quantitative Value: 0.6 meters, Test that produced the value: Approximated maximum total propagated uncertainty in meters result: (missing) report: (DQ_AbsoluteExternalPositionalAccuracy) nameOfMeasure: Vertical Positional Accuracy evaluationMethodDescription: Multibeam data met IHO Order 1A specifications. The bathymetry was processed in CARIS HIPS software to correct for post-processed navigation/positioning, tides, sound velocity, calibration values, and noise. After processing in CARIS HIPS, CUBE base surfaces in the CSAR file format were generated at a 1-meter bin size for each survey block. These CSAR surfaces were exported to BAG format, ESRI Grid format, and color-coded geo-tiff formats.
