These files contain classified topo/bathy lidar data. Data are classified as 1 (valid non-ground topographic data), 2 (valid ground topographic data), and 29 (valid bathymetric data). Classes 1 and 2 are defined in accordance with the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) classification standards. These data were collected by the Coastal Zone Mapping and Imaging Lidar (CZMIL) system. CZMIL integrates a lidar sensor with simultaneous topographic and bathymetric capabilities, a digital camera and a hyperspectral imager on a single remote sensing platform for use in coastal mapping and charting activities. Native lidar data is not generally in a format accessible to most Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Specialized in-house and commercial software packages are used to process the native lidar data into 3-dimensional positions that can be imported into GIS software for visualization and further analysis.
Horizontal positions, provided in decimal degrees of latitude and longitude, are referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 National Adjustment of 2011 (NAD83 PA11).
Vertical positions are referenced to the (NAD83 PA11) ellipsoid and provided in meters. The 3-D position data are sub-divided into a series of LAS files, which are tiled into quarter-quads or 5km boxes. In addition to the lidar point data, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), created from the lidar point data are also available. DEMs were created from all classes of points (1, 2, 29) at a 1 meter grid size and bare earth DEMs were created from the ground and bathymetric data classes (2, 29) at a 1 meter grid size. These products have not been reviewed by the NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) and any conclusions drawn from the analysis of this information are not the responsibility of NOAA or OCM. The data are available upon request via email at: coastal.info@noaa.gov. Please provide the name of the data set and "DEM Request" in the subject line.
The FTP versions of the LAZ files have GPS-derived orthometric heights. To adjust to the Local Mean Sea Level (LMSL) use the following value to correct the vertical heights: -0.474 m.

Completeness Report
This data set covers the spatial extent of topographic lidar data obtained during this survey.
Conceptual Consistency
During inspection and QC of the lidar point cloud, flightline to flightline elevation differences met the CZMIL sensor specifications.
These data were collected using the CZMIL system. It is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The system collects topobathy lidar data at 10 kHz and RGB imagery at 2 Hz. A CASI-1500 hyperspectral line scanner is integrated with the system as well. Aircraft position, velocity and acceleration information are collected through a combination of Novatel and POS A/V 510 equipment. All raw data streams are transferred to the office for downloading and processing in CZMIL's Hydro Fusion software. Aircraft position data are processed using POSPac software and the results are combined with the lidar data to produce 3-D positions for each lidar shot. Upon inspection and QA/QC in the software packages Fledermaus and PFM_ABE, anomalous data are flagged as invalid. PFM_ABE software then converts all valid data from ellipsoid to orthometric heights based on the NGS' GEOID12B model and exports valid lidar data as a series of unclassified LAS files.
2013-11-17T00:00:00
AS files are imported into GeoCue V2014.1.21.1, which is a geospatial workflow production and management software tool employed by JALBTCX to perform and monitor production of data products. Upon import into GeoCue, A customized classification macro, built upon the TerraScan V13 module within Microstation V8i, classifies valid topobathy data as ground points (2), unclassified points (1), and bathymetric points (29). Upon completion the macro, the classification results undergo quality control and any misclassified points are manually edited. In areas of dense vegetation the bare earth ground points might be incorrectly classified due to the inability of the laser to penetrate the canopy and reach the bare ground. In these areas, JALBTCX defaults to the algorithm's "ground" surface instead of manually reclassifying those points. They are partitioned into a series of 1km boxes, one Classified LAS file per box and converted to NAD83 2011 Geoid 12B.. The format of the file is LAS version 1.2. Data are classified as 1 (valid non-ground topographic data), 2 (valid ground topographic data), and 29 (valid bathymetric data). Then the LAS files are adjusted to Local Mean Sea Level (LMSL). The Geoid12B to HI LMSL vertical adjustment value derived from published NGS control point datasheets for HI, The Big Island, was -0.601m.
2016-03-02T00:00:00
The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) received LAZ files in las format from JALBTCX. The files contained LiDAR intensity and elevation measurements for the island of Big Island. Tiles were delivered horizontally referenced to geographic coordinate system (decimal degrees) and vertical heights were to the Hawaii ellipsoid in meters. OCM performed the following processing on the data for storage purposes and to make it available within Digital Coast:
1. The LAS files were compressed to laz format using laszip.
2. Data filenames were standardized to OCM file naming convention (retaining USACE names).
3. The LAStools software scripts lasinfo, lasvalidate, and lasduplicate were run on the laz files.
4. The files were sorted by gpstime and zipped to database and to http.
2016-03-29T00:00:00
The vertical values in this data set have been converted to reference GPS-derived orthometric height via GEOID model (GEOID12B) meters, using the GEOID12B grids provided by the National Geodetic Survey.
Any datum and projection transformations were then done with the Office for Coastal Management 'datum_shift' program. Compression to an LAZ file was done with the LAStools 'laszip' program and can be unzipped with the same free program (laszip.org)
